[ OVERVIEW ]
Three landscapes, no wasted time
Into the Wild is the most efficient way to experience the full character of Tanzania's northern circuit. It begins among the elephant herds and ancient baobabs of Tarangire, then devotes three unhurried days to the Serengeti's endless plains, before finishing with a dawn descent into the Ngorongoro Crater — one of the most concentrated wildlife experiences on the continent.
This itinerary suits travelers who want depth without a long commitment. Three days in the Serengeti means your guide can read the wildlife and the season, rather than rushing between parks. Strange granite kopjes, mirage-like watering holes, and the great herds of the migration are all part of the rhythm of these days.

[ DAY BY DAY ]
DAY 1
Tarangire National Park
DEPART ARUSHA — 2 HR DRIVE WEST
Leave Arusha early and arrive at Tarangire by mid-morning, where ancient baobabs preside over a landscape that moves at the pace of its elephants. Tarangire holds one of Tanzania's highest elephant densities, with herds of fifty or more a common sight along the Tarangire River during the dry months. Spend the afternoon on a game drive through the park's mix of riverine forest, swamp, and acacia woodland before settling in to camp or lodge for the night.
Elephant herds · Baobab landscapes · Tree-climbing lions
DAY 2
Ngorongoro Highlands to Serengeti
Climb into the Ngorongoro Highlands and cross the Ngorongoro Conservation Area as the landscape dries and opens toward the Serengeti plains. At Oldupai Gorge, an optional stop at the museum traces the discovery of some of humankind's earliest evidence — a quietly profound detour on a day otherwise spent watching the horizon change. An optional visit to a traditional Maasai village offers a glimpse of a way of life that has coexisted with this wildlife for generations. Arrive in the central Seronera area by late afternoon.
OLDUPAI GORGE · OPTIONAL MAASAI VILLAGE WALK
Oldupai Gorge · Ngorongoro highland views · Maasai culture
DAY 3
Serengeti Seronera Game Drives
SERONERA RIVER VALLEY · YEAR ROUND PREDATOR COUNTRY
A full day given over to the Serengeti's signature landscape: endless plains broken by granite kopjes, weathered outcrops that have stood since volcanic activity millions of years ago and now shelter their own small ecosystems of lizards, hyrax, and resting cats. In the right season, this is also where the Great Migration's wildebeest and zebra herds arrive, having followed instinct south from the Maasai Mara. Overnight close to the Seronera River, with the sounds of the Serengeti carrying after dark.
Great Migration (seasonal) · Kopjes · Lion · Cheetah
DAY 4
Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater Rim
SERENGETI EAST to THE NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA
A further morning of game viewing in the central Serengeti, where the dry season concentrates large herds and big cats around the remaining water. By late morning, wind east toward the park's East Gate and climb back into the Ngorongoro highlands. Arrive at the crater rim in time to watch dusk settle over the caldera below — one of the most striking transitions of light on the entire circuit. Overnight on the rim.
Dry season predator action · Crater rim at dusk
DAY 5
Ngorongoro Crater · Return to Arusha
Descend into the crater early, when the chance of spotting the elusive Black Rhino is highest and the light across the caldera floor is at its best. Within the crater's 260 km² walls, a self-contained ecosystem holds elephant, zebra, wildebeest, hippo, and dense prides of lion in close proximity. Stop for lunch beside the hippo pool before the drive back to Arusha, arriving by evening.

Traveling with less time?
A 4-day version of this itinerary is possible, covering the same three parks with two nights in the Serengeti instead of three. The pace is noticeably faster, and you'll feel the difference on the Serengeti days. If four days is what your schedule allows, we'll make it work. If there's any flexibility, the extra day is worth it.

[ BEST TIME TO TRAVEL ]
There’s no wrong season, only different ones
June - October
Vegetation thins and wildlife concentrates around permanent water. This is the most consistent game-viewing of the year. Northward wildebeest river crossings peak July-October.
Dry season
March - May
Lower prices, far fewer visitors, landscapes transformed by rain. Exceptional birdlife (500+ species active), calving season drama Jan-Feb, and great photographic light.
