[ OVERVIEW ]

The all-rounder most climbers end up choosing

Machame is Kilimanjaro's most climbed route, and the reasons are straightforward: it crosses more distinct terrain than any other path up the mountain, posts a stronger summit success rate than Marangu, and doesn't demand the remoteness or extra travel time that Lemosho does. It approaches from the south, climbing through rainforest into moorland, alpine desert, and finally the summit zone with the Barranco Wall, Kilimanjaro's single most memorable trail feature, along the way.

The trade-off is popularity itself. Machame shares its early camps with more climbers than the quieter western and northern routes, and because it's tent-based throughout, it asks a little more of you logistically than a hut route would. Between the 6- and 7-day versions, we recommend the 7th day to nearly every climber. The extra night at Karanga Camp breaks up what would otherwise be a long push from Barranco to Barafu, and the additional acclimatization measurably improves summit night.

MACHAME IS A STRONG FIT IF

  • You want strong summit odds without the extra days Lemosho needs

  • Varied scenery matters more to you than solitude

  • You're comfortable camping for six or seven nights

  • You're booking the 7-day version for the added acclimatization

CONSIDER ANOTHER ROUTE IF

  • You'd strongly prefer a hut over a tent — look at Marangu

  • Avoiding crowds is your top priority — Lemosho or Rongai are quieter

  • You want the single highest success rate available — that's Lemosho

  • You're uneasy with steep scrambling, even non-technical

Not sure Machame is right for you? Tell us your timeframe, budget, and trekking experience and we can recommend a route that fits — even if that means pointing you to Marangu or Lemosho instead.

[ ITINERARY ]

Seven days, four climate zones, one famous wall

Shown here is the 7-day itinerary — the version we recommend for nearly every climber. The 6-day version follows the same route, simply without the second night at Karanga Camp.

DAY 1

Machame Gate → Machame Camp

1,800 M → 2,835 M · 11 KM · 5-7 HOURS ·MONTANE RAINFOREST

Register at Machame Gate and climb steadily through dense, dripping rainforest — one of the most beautiful forest walks on the mountain. Tree ferns, hanging moss, and the calls of turacos and colobus monkeys accompany the ascent to your first camp at the forest's upper edge.

Old-growth rainforest canopy · Black-and-white colobus monkeys

DAY 2

Machame Camp → Shira Cave Camp

2,835 M → 3,750 M · 5 KM · 4-6 HOURS · MOORLAND

A short but steep climb takes you out of the forest and onto the open moorland of the Shira Plateau. Giant lobelia and senecio punctuate the landscape, and on a clear afternoon Kibo's summit dome appears in full for the first time, framed by the rim of the ancient Shira caldera.

First views of Kibo & Mawenzi · Shira Plateau

DAY 3

ACCLIMATIZATION DAY

Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

3,750M → HIKE TO 4,600 M → SLEEP AT 3,900 M · 10 KM · 6-8 HOURS · APLINE DESERT

This is a "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization day and one of the most important on the mountain. You'll climb past the imposing volcanic plug of Lava Tower before descending into the lush, sheltered Barranco Valley — spending a few hours near 4,600 m before sleeping nearly 650 m lower, which meaningfully aids acclimatization for the days ahead.

Lava Tower · Giant groundsel in the Barranco Valley

DAY 4

Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

3,900 M → 3,995 M · 5 KM · 4-5 HOURS · ALPINE DESERT

The day begins with the Barranco Wall — a roughly 300 m scramble up a rocky face that looks more intimidating in photos than it feels underfoot; hands are useful but no technical climbing skill is required, and your guides know the route well. Beyond the wall, a shorter, gentler walk across ridges and valleys brings you to Karanga Camp, splitting what would otherwise be a long single push toward Barafu.

The Barranco Wall · Views back toward Mount Meru

DAY 5

Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

3,995 M → 4,673 M · 3-4 HOURS TOTAL · ALPINE DESERT

A short, deliberately easy day to preserve energy for what comes next. Barafu — meaning "ice" in Swahili — sits exposed on a rocky ridge with sweeping views over the Rift Valley clouds below. Guides brief the group thoroughly on summit-night logistics before an early dinner and an attempt at rest.

Barafu Ridge · Sea of clouds over the plains

DAY 6

Summit Day → Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

4,673 M → 5,895 M SUMMIT → DESCEND TO 3,100 M · 15 KM · 12-14 HOURS TOTAL

Wake around midnight and begin the summit push by headlamp, climbing steep scree switchbacks toward Stella Point on the crater rim — the hardest stretch of the entire climb. From Stella Point, a gentler hour along the rim leads to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, typically reached around sunrise. After time at the top, you'll descend all the way past Barafu to Mweka Camp, back in the moorland zone, for a well-earned night's rest.

Sunrise from Uhuru Peak · Kibo’s remaining glaciers

DAY 7

Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Hotel

DESCEND TO 1,640 M · 10 KM · 3-4 HOURS

A final, mostly gentle descent through thick forest to Mweka Gate, where you'll collect your summit certificate and say goodbye to your crew. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower and a proper bed — well-earned by this point.

Summit certificate ceremony at the gate

Booking the 6-day version removes Day 4 entirely — you'll trek from Barranco directly to Barafu Camp in one longer day, skipping the overnight at Karanga. We're glad to run it that way, but we'll always recommend the 7th day first.

[ WHAT TO EXPECT ]

What’s actually different about this route

Camping every night

Machame has no huts at any camp. Instead, you'll sleep in a two- or three-person mountain tent every night, with a separate dining tent for meals. We provide sturdy four-season tents and sleeping mats; a warm sleeping bag is essential and available to rent in Moshi or Arusha if you'd rather not travel with your own.

The Barranco Wall

This is Machame's signature feature and its most-asked-about moment. It's a scramble with some exposure, not a technical climb — no ropes or harnesses are used, and guides talk climbers through each section. Most people find it the most enjoyable, not the most frightening, part of the trek. It occurs on the morning of Day 4.

Every Misele Kilimanjaro crew follows KPAP-aligned porter welfare standards. Read more about our crews and climbing standards on the Kilimanjaro overview page.

[ BEST TIME TO CLIMB ]

One mountain, two dry seasons

Kilimanjaro's weather windows don't change by route. Machame follows the same two dry seasons as all other paths up the mountain: January to mid-March, and June through October, the busier and more reliable of the two. Because Machame is already the most-climbed route, expect its camps to feel fuller than quieter alternatives during peak months.
