[ OVERVIEW ]
Where the forest meets the mountain
Most travelers pass through Arusha on their way somewhere else — and in doing so, they miss something genuinely remarkable. Arusha National Park sits less than an hour from the city, yet contains one of the most ecologically varied landscapes in all of East Africa: dense Afromontane forest, open savanna, alkaline crater lakes, and the dramatic volcanic cone of Mount Meru rising to 4,566 metres.
Unlike the great plains of the Serengeti or the enclosed bowl of Ngorongoro, Arusha National Park rewards a different kind of attention. Fewer crowds, slower pace, and the rare privilege of a walking safari — one of the only parks in Tanzania where you can step out of the vehicle and move through the landscape on foot, guided by a ranger who knows every trail. For wildlife photographers, the light filtering through the Ngurdoto forest canopy in the early morning is extraordinary.
This is a park is the ideal first or last day of any northern Tanzania safari itinerary — and for many Misele travelers who discover it, it becomes the unexpected highlight of the trip.
[ WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT ]
Three things Arusha National Park does unlike anywhere else
Walking safaris in true wilderness
One of very few national parks in Tanzania where guided walking safaris are permitted. Moving on foot through Ngurdoto Forest alongside buffalo and giraffe is a safari experience that no vehicle can replicate. The Momela Lakes - seven shades of one landscape
Seven shallow alkaline lakes, each a slightly different hue due to their distinct algal communities. Flamingos, pelicans, and hundreds of waterfowl gather here. A morning spent at the lakeside is quietly unforgettable.Mount Meru — a summit with Kilimanjaro in the frame
Tanzania's second-highest peak offers a three-day climb of genuine challenge and extraordinary reward. The summit sunrise — with Kilimanjaro visible on the horizon — is among the most striking views in East Africa.
What You’ll Encounter
Arusha National Park is not a big-five destination in the conventional sense — lions and cheetahs are rarely seen here — but that absence creates an ecological space where other species flourish. The park holds some of Tanzania's best populations of colobus monkey, giraffe, and hippo, and its birdlife is genuinely world-class.
Black-and-white colobus monkey
Troops move through the Ngurdoto Forest canopy with remarkable ease. One of the most reliably sighted primates in northern Tanzania.Reticulated giraffe
The forest edge near Ngurdoto Crater is excellent giraffe habitat. On foot or by vehicle, encounters here feel intimate in a way the open plains cannot match.Lesser flamingo
Seasonal gatherings on the alkaline lakes can number in the thousands. Their pink-hued reflections on the mineral-tinted water make for extraordinary photography.Hippo
The Momela Lakes area holds a resident hippo population. Evening viewing near the water — as they emerge to graze — is particularly rewarding.African buffalo
Ngurdoto Crater — sometimes called "Tanzania's little Ngorongoro" — shelters a self-contained buffalo herd. Viewing is from the crater rim only, which adds drama to the sighting.400+ bird species
From Hartlaub's turaco in the forest to African fish eagle over the lakes, the park is a serious birding destination. Best experienced in the early morning with a specialist guide.[ ACTIVITIES ]
What you can do here
Walking safaris
Walking safaris require a park ranger escort and are subject to conditions on the day. Misele's guides coordinate directly with park authorities to design the optimal experience for your group.
Mount Meru climb
3 days to climb. Moderate difficulty, especially on the last ascent day. Be rewarded with spectacular Kilimanjaro views at the Meru summit.
Game drives
Cover the expanse of the park, from the lakes to the viewpoint, plains. See the expanse of wildlife.
Canoe safaris
Canoe safaris on the Momela Lakes are available seasonally and are particularly suited to birders and families looking for a quieter alternative to vehicle-based game drives.
[ BEST TIME TO VISIT ]
Best time to visit Arusha National Park
Arusha National Park is accessible year-round and located close enough to Arusha city to be visited on almost any travel itinerary. Unlike more remote parks, it does not require long drives or charter flights, which makes it a practical and rewarding option even on shorter trips.
DRY SEASON · JUN - NOV
Peak Wildlife Viewing
Peak season
The best overall season for game viewing and walking safaris. Trails are dry and accessible, vegetation is thinner (making wildlife easier to spot), and Mount Meru climbs are most reliable. July through October is peak season for Meru summit attempts.
GREEN SEASON · MAR - MAY
Exceptional for Birding
Best value
The long rains fall March through May; December to February is a shorter dry period within the green season. Birdlife is at its richest and most varied. The forest is lush, colors are vivid, and crowd numbers are lower. January and February are also excellent for Mount Meru.

Questions About the Arusha National Park
[ FAQs ]
-
The main gate at Ngurdoto is approximately 25 km from Arusha city centre — typically a 30 to 45 minute drive depending on traffic. This makes the park uniquely accessible as a first or last activity on any northern Tanzania itinerary, without the early departures required for more distant parks.
-
Yes, particularly if you value variety or are interested in walking safaris, birdlife, or photography in a forest environment. It is very different from the open-plains parks — less about volume of wildlife, more about intimacy and ecological diversity. Many guests on five- to seven-day itineraries include a half-day here as a counterpoint to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
-
Absolutely. A Mount Meru climb typically takes three days, and many travelers combine it with a morning or afternoon game drive and walking safari in the lower park areas before or after the ascent. Misele Safaris can design a combined itinerary that makes the most of your time in the park.
-
Walking safaris are conducted with a professional armed park ranger escort — this is mandatory and non-negotiable. The park's ecosystem has fewer predators than savanna parks, which is what makes walking viable. Your Misele guide will brief you fully before the walk begins. Most travelers describe it as one of the most memorable experiences of their entire safari.
-
The park sits at altitude and temperatures can be cooler than the lowland parks, especially in the early morning. Bring a light layer, good walking shoes if you are planning a walking safari or Meru climb, and sun protection. The forest sections are often shaded, but lake areas can be exposed. A rain jacket is advisable in the green season.
